Christina "Rowan" Choi died on March 30, 2023, according to their obituary, which remembers them as "a free spirit full of love."
Rowan's mom, Michelle, on a GoFundMe urged parents to make their children feel safe to share what's going on in their lives.
"Love them unconditionally and without judgement," she wrote on the campaign, launched to help fund the bench and tree. "Life is too short, so make the most of every single moment. Remember that everyone has a story so always be kind."
Rowan graduated from Brentsville High School in 2010 and went on to attend Northern Virginia Community College for two years, then traveled, their obituary says.
Rowan went on to study health and wellness at Hill College and was passionate about the arts, camping, hiking, karaoke, cooking, swimming, Renaissance fairs, and more.
Rowan's brother, Michael, penned a touching tribute that he published to Facebook.
"They were the person who lit up the room with energy as soon as they walked in, they didn't care if they danced around like no one was even in the room as long as they were vibing and having a good time," Michael wrote.
"Rowan was a free spirit full of love for almost everybody they met. They were creative and innovative with every thought or idea as well as very spontaneous, Rowan was also compassionate and sympathetic towards others. One thing I know without doubt, Rowan was fierce like a wolverine. Anywhere they went, Rowan would always bring that energy needed to lighten the mood."
